FCA Recalls 410,000 More Ram Pickups for Tailgate Lock Defect

Original source: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

Screen Shot 2019-05-22 at 3.00.14 PM.png Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling an additional 410,351 older Ram pickup trucks because a faulty lock mechanism can allow the tailgate to drop suddenly and spill its contents.

That could lead to a road hazard and crash if contents spilled from the back of the pickups, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

FCA recalled more than 1.1 million similarly equipped 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks with shorter beds in August 2018. FCA now has recalled more than 1.5 million trucks for the issue.

The latest recalled pickups have eight-foot beds and a power-locking tailgate. The power lock actuator could fracture, allowing the lock rod control bracket to move too far and pull the lock rods. The latches then could release the tailgate.

No known crashes or injuries are related to the condition, FCA said.

Models affected in the latest recall include:

186,607 Ram 1500 pickups from the 2015-2017 model year built between June 2014 and March 2018 and 2018 models built before April 1, 2018.
118,079 2015-2018 Ram 2500 pickups built between May 2014 and March 2018.
105,665 2015-2018 Ram 3500 pickups built between June 2014 and March 2018.
Ram dealers will fix the locks for free. FCA will reimburse customers who paid to have the work done before the recall. Recall notifications will go to dealers and owners June 28.

The NHTSA recall number is 19V-347.
